About

Powell Presbyterian Church (PPC) was founded in 1969 in Powell, Tennessee. Over the years, PPC has had six installed pastors. Rev. Dr. Katina Sharp is the first female pastor, installed in 2018. In 2019, the church celebrated its 50th anniversary during which all of the living pastors led a collaborative worship service.

What is the worship service like?

Worship at Powell Presbyterian Church traditional, incorporating the rich heritage of our Christian faith with hymns and cantored psalms. We follow a 4-part order of service: Preparing for the Word, Receiving the Word, Responding to the Word, and Taking the Word into the World. Communion is shared on the first Sunday of the month and on special occasions and is generally done by intinction (coming forward and dipping the bread into the cup of juice). Gluten-free communion (bread and juice) are available–request this when you come forward to receive your elements.

Coffee and fellowship are available before and after worship outside of the Sanctuary with a longer time of fellowship on second Sundays after worship.

What about my kids?

All children are welcome to attend worship. There is a table in the center of the sanctuary where many children choose to sit and color during the worship service.

We have a beautiful and safe nursery located down the hall from the Sanctuary. Of course, even very young children are welcome to stay in the sanctuary if you prefer to keep them with you. All children get the wiggles and sometimes feel overwhelmed, and we welcome children, even when they are having a rough morning.

The worship service is streamed into the Parlor (first door on the right in the hallway nearest the sanctuary), so if you need to take your children out because they are having a rough morning you may still participate in worship in this room. Please bring them back next week though! We want you and your children to worship with us as much as you are able.

Nursing is welcome in any part of the building (including the sanctuary during worship).

Youth group for Middle and High School youth meets Sunday evenings from 6:00-8:00.

Sunday School for children, youth, and adults is at 9:30.

What do we believe?

As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) we believe and affirm that:

  • God is the creator and sovereign ruler of all things.
  • Jesus Christ, the Word of God Incarnate and the Savior of the world, is the one who makes God known in human form and models human life as God intended it to be lived.
  • God is with us always through the Holy Spirit, giving and sustaining all life. This Spirit is the one who convicts us of sin and reminds us of the life-giving teachings of Jesus Christ.
  • The Bible is the Word of God written–the reliable guide for faith and life.
  • The Church is the regularly gathered body of believers and disciples of Jesus Christ.
  • There is one baptism for God’s people. It is the visible sign of the invisible grace we have received from God and unites us a the Body of Christ.
  • God calls people of all genders to ministry (Galatians 3:28) and delights in the gifts of all.
  • God sends us each out in mission, the intentional sharing in word and deed of God’s love.
  • Our witness is accomplished by the personal and corporate commitment of our time, talents, and treasure toward the building of God’s kin-dom
What is the brief history of PPC?

Powell Presbyterian Church was founded in 1969 and built across from the new Broadacres subdivision. The congregation originally met in a two-story house. As the congregation grew in size, a sanctuary and fellowship hall were added in 1974. The congregation later added an education wing in 1983. In 2000, a larger fellowship hall was built, along with a professional kitchen and a youth room. The pastors of the church over time are Rev. Frederick Smith (organizing pastor, 1969-70), Rev. Earl Woodall (1971-79), Rev. Kirk Werner (1981-1987), Rev. David Garnett (1988-2008), Rev. Jonathan Warren (2009-2016), and Rev. Dr. Katina Sharp (2018-present).

Is PPC open and affirming to members of the LGBTQIA+ community?

Yes. We believe that God made all people in God’s image and that all should be welcomed in the church as well. We hold a pride service every June. We have 4 all-gender restrooms (and 2 gender-specific restrooms), and we encourage the practice of using pronouns in our introductions and greetings. You will be safe here. All means all. (Please see our Statement of Inclusion on the main home page.)

How do you serve the community and the world?

PPC is a Matthew 25 congregation, meaning that we have joined the PCUSA’s initiative to build congregational vitality, eradicate systemic poverty, and dismantle structural racism. As part of these efforts, PPC is a Family Promise host church (hosting families experiencing homelessness 4 weeks a year), has an active food ministry, participates in Powell Christian Community Concerns (offering assistance with utility and medical bills), partners with the Central Plateau Scholarship Program, provides birthing kits to midwives in Haiti, hosts Lions Club Eye Clinics, and provides and annual Angel Tree for local refugees. PPC has done 2 mission trips to McAllen, TX in the last 3 years to work in an asylum center. PPC sponsors refugee families through Bridge Refugee Services. We also have free Wednesday evening dinners for the community, have active Boy and Girl Scout troupes, host a homeschool co-op with scholarships for those who cannot pay, and maintain an active LGBTQIA+ ministry called Affirmed.
